Fun for all ages at the NYSCF fun show

(Auburn, NY) — From the cavy costumes, including the winning "meatball" to the gourmet coffee bar, the New York State Cavy Fanciers' fun show in Auburn, N.Y. Jan. 30 was a success for all ages.

The show, titled "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Cavies..." included the fun classes like the costume judging, which the "meatball" pig, sitting in a bowl of string "spaghetti, won over an angel, a devil, a tuxedoed pig, a chocolate bar, a ladybug and a pig in a camouflage background.

The "Jabba the Hut lookalike," class for huge or couch-potato pigs was won by a 42-oz. Teddy boar. The "Dumbo ears" class, for those who look like they would be able to fly, was indesputably won by a barely-weaned White Crested who has yet to grow into those upstanding ears.

The "What's under all that hair" class was for the clipped or barbered longhairs, and the winner was a long-haired Texel boar with rather short head and shoulder furnishings, whose cagemate apparently fancies himself a beautician.

The "Swirls, curls and whorls" class, for rosettes, angel wings and any other coat pattern, was won by a White Crested with a prominent head rosette. The “Most promising junior” was also a White Crested. Winners went home with mugs featuring embroidery by NYSCF club member Linda Wilbur.

Experienced breeders and a licensed judge led discussions of colors and breeds as well as claw clipping and other demonstrations. NYSCF president Val Horning noted that unlike a formal American Rabbit Breeders Association licensed show, this was an ideal opportunity to ask questions and learn first hand “everything you ever wanted to know,” as well as just have fun. “Hopefully these are our future ARBA members and rabbit and cavy show exhibitors.”

The 46 entrants traveled as far as from northern NY and southern Ontario, braving temperatures below zero Fahrenheit. Exhibitors included nearly the entire Jefferson County, N.Y. "Peeps and Squeaks" 4-H club as well as many NYSCF members and others.

Donated baked goods, doughnuts and snacks, soda pop and an array of gourmet coffees and teas, plus pizza for lunch, kept judges and exhibitors fed.

The fun show raised revenue for the club's hosting of the 2011 American Cavy Breeders Association specialty show slated for Rochester, N.Y. Club members took advantage of the time to hold a planning meeting. # # #
